AVENGERS: ENDGAME Writers Explain How One Returns The Soul Stone on Vormir

Vormir

If you have been wondering how a person would return the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have an answer for you.

Spoilers:

At the end of Avengers: Endgame Captain America volunteers to travel through time and space to put all the Soul Stones back that were used to defeat Thanos and his army. We don’t actually see this part of the film play out, but I’m sure it must’ve been a hell of an adventure for Cap!

This means that he had to go to Vormir and return the Soul Stone to Red Skull. But how does that actually work? While it was already explained that Steve Rogers did come face to face again with Red Skull to return the stone, where does the stone go?

While talking to HeroBlend podcast, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explain how it works:

Stephen McFeely: It’s a good question. I think it is an everlasting exchange.

Christopher Markus: There’s a slot.

Stephen McFeely: That’s right. Yeah, that’s right. It’s like an old time bank. It’s a pneumatic tube.

Christopher Markus: You put it back, but you don’t get anything in return. It’s not like a pawn shop.

Some fans were hoping that maybe by returning the Soul Stone, Black Widow would be returned. But nope! That’s not how it works. Black Widow is dead for good.

The writers were then asked if Avengers: Endgame ever included a scene where Cap and Red Skull were reunited, and they explained:

Christopher Markus: That was hard for me personally to get over.

Stephen McFeely: That’s right. That’s true. I remember.

Christopher Markus: Because I very much wanted like, ‘How are we not getting Cap into space to see the Red Skull?’ And it just otherwise was not the story to tell for Cap, but it is extremely tempting.

When previously talking about how things might go down between Cap and Red Skull, director Joe Russo explained:

“Red Skull would probably put the soul stone back to its location, and wait for the next unfortunate stone seeker to make a sacrifice. Cap and Red Skull probably won’t fight. It’s because it’s his mission to return the stone to its original place. The Red Skull is also no longer the same Red Skull from FA. He is more like a ghost, you could almost say he’s a completely different entity now. He only exists to guard the stone, his past conscious may or may not exist anymore.”

I would have just liked to see the reaction on Captain America’s face when he goes to Vormir and sees the Red Skull. What would his instant reaction be? Would he even really trust to give the Soul Stone to him!? It seems like after everything Cap went through with Red Skull and the Tesseract in The First Avengers, he might be a tiny bit uncertain about handing the Soul Stone to him. I want to see that shot in the film or maybe in Blu-Ray release.
