China Opens Robot Hotel

We are living in a science-fiction movie. It wasn’t that long ago when people thought the airplane, the automobile, and even the cell phone were the products of dreamers. Hell, two hundred years ago we couldn’t even take pictures. The most recent pipedream is undoubtedly artificial intelligence and robotics. Recently a hotel in China has brought us one step closer to that pipedream.

The Pengheng Space Capsules Hotel in Shenzhen, China, is a space-themed hotel almost entirely staffed by robots, with blue-lit sleeping pods instead of rooms. But despite such slick accommodations, the rates are exceedingly affordable at just 70 yuan ($11) per person per night.

Now before everyone starts complaining about the loss of jobs you need to ask yourself if someone really wants to be a maid. Chances are if you offered that maid an education and an opportunity at something more fulfilling she’d take it.

Right now the robots in Hotel in Shenzhen, China are only performing basic tasks, but who knows what they’ll be doing in the future. Waiting tables today could mean cooking and cleaning tomorrow, and everyone knows where I really want this to go.
