The active volcano has an elevation of 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) and is a popular tourist attraction in East Java. The volcano is situated within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and its name is derived from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation.
Many tourists visit Mount Bromo by way of the nearby mountain village, Cemoro Lawang. From there it is possible to walk to the volcano in about 45 minutes. For those who do not wish to hike, there are guided vehicle tours also available.
