As it happens, the hydrogen engine is not the best answer for the vehicles. Yes, we know; that is quite contrary to general belief. In one of the latest videos by Engineering Explained, the difficulties with the hydrogen engines and the pros of using hydrogen fuel cell are examined in detail.
For those of you who don’t know much about a hydrogen engine; don’t worry. We will tell you a bit about it. It operates in a similar manner to the internal combustion engine – it generates power by making use of fuel from a tank. However, as opposed to the fuel choices for a combustion engine – gasoline or diesel – the hydrogen engine relies on pressurized hydrogen gas. This hydrogen is chemically fused with oxygen from the air and creates water.
According to Engineering Explained, ‘On the surface, hydrogen combustion engines seem like the ultimate solution for car guys. You still get a wonderful four-stroke piston-cylinder combustion engine.’
Theoretically speaking, as is the case with a hydrogen fuel cell, a hydrogen combustion engine should not be generating carbon emissions that are damaging to the environment. That is because the hydrogen fuel does not have any carbon in it. However, owing to the combustion process that is involved with the hydrogen combustion engines; the process ends up creating nitrogen oxide.
