  1. Shrek the Musical (2013)

Shrek is great for kids, families, and people of all ages. This musical adaptation of the 2001 Dreamworks Animation film, Shrek, ran on Broadway over twelve months starting in 2008. The story is the familiar tale told in the original film with added elements of the film’s sequels.

The songs are fun and the characters are as colorful as they are in animated form. The film version is a compilation of several live performances as well as a performance shot without an audience. It is presented in two acts and is enjoyable from beginning to end.

  1. Across the Universe (2007)

If you love The Beatles, then you will love Across the Universe. This 2007 film is a jukebox musical; the songs it contains were not written for this story, but rather were popular compositions by members of The Beatles long before the film itself was written. It contains thirty-four of their songs in all.

Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, Joe Anderson, and T.V. Carpio, this tale is a romantic drama. It tells the story of a romance between an upper-class American girl and a poor English artist during the time of the Vietnam War.

It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Achievement in Costume Design and for the Golden Globes’ Best Comedy or Musical Motion Picture. Although it didn’t win either of these prestigious awards, it is a wonderful film that is worth a watch.

  1. Burlesque (2010)

This film got a lot of press upon its release due to the starring roles of two very talented, popular, American female singers – Cher and Christina Aguilera. The soundtrack features eight songs sung by Aguilera and two performed by Cher; it is a combination of cover songs and originals, and, at the time, were Cher’s first two released recordings in over seven years.

The story of Burlesque is not for youthful eyes; a young girl (Aguilera) moves to Los Angeles to try to make it in showbiz. After failing to land a role after many auditions, she instead decides to pursue a career on the burlesque stage. Many ups and downs follow.

This musical received mixed reviews, but if you are a fan of either or both of the leading ladies, this one will be a hit in your home.

  1. West Side Story (1961)

When it comes to musicals, it doesn’t get much more classic than West Side Story. This love story feels as true and realistic today as it did in 1961 and is about a forbidden love between two teenagers.

If you’re not familiar with this heartbreaking tale, two rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds – the Sharks and the Jets – battle throughout. Things get more dangerous and complicated when a former member of the Jets falls in love with the sister of the leader of the Sharks. Since this music was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, you can probably guess how it ends.

The music in this is fantastic and memorable and the songs, including the deep emotions they evoke, will stick with you for a very long time. Whether you’ve never seen West Side Story before, or if you haven’t seen it in a while, it’s time to give this one a spin.

  1. Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

This sequel to the 1964 film Mary Poppins stars Emily Blunt and features a famous supporting cast. Although it did not receive the high critical acclaim of the original starring Julie Andrews, it received good reviews overall and is quite enjoyable and is worth watching.

This story is set twenty-five years after the original; Mary Poppins returns to her now-adult former charges Jane and Michael Banks after they experience a family tragedy to now watch Michael’s children. Various visual effects create magical scenes that will enchant and delight.

  1. La La Land (2016)

La La Land was a gigantic hit and if you haven’t seen it yet, now is the time. This film won seven Golden Globes, five awards at the British Academy Film Awards, and six Academy Awards. When it comes to winning awards, La La Land was inarguably one of the most successful musical films of all time.

Starring Ryan Gosling as a jazz pianist and Emma Stone as a young actress, this tale follows the pair as they fall in love while chasing their dreams in Los Angeles. The music is beautiful and the love story is relatable. You will get sucked right into the story of this pair, and the ending might surprise you.

  1. Annie (1982)

Every young girl and even many boys grew up with the charming story of little orphan Annie. Based on a long-running comic strip that began in the 1920s, this film adaptation of the 1977 musical has been a hit for decades.

Set in the Great Depression, Annie lives in an orphanage run by a cruel alcoholic overseer. Billionaire Oliver Warbucks fosters Annie in an attempt to improve his public image and ends up getting involved in much more than he bargained for. Great performances by Carol Burnett, Tim Curry, Bernadette Peters, and more will have you laughing and crying all the way through.
